The Root Misconception

1.1 The book is not about the mind. It is about what happens when different philosophers use mental conduct words like “knows”, “believes”, “perceives” and then ask “what are those words referring to?”.

1.2 Then they propose that “they must be referring to inner events in a private theatre.” This is a misconception.

2.1 Galileo proposed everything in space obeys mechanical laws.

2.2 Descartes, a brilliant scientist, didn’t want to accept that humans are like that - that they obey mechanical laws. So he negated the physical space by defining a new category of Mind = Not-matter, not-in-space, not-mechanical, not-public.

2.2.1 basically, he created the Para-mechanical Hypothesis, in which Mind is a spectral / ghostly machine which

obeys ghostly laws (not mechanical, doesn’t remain in space but in some other dimension)
one’s own mind can see itself but not other minds (unlike physical objects, again)
can exert effects and causes (but always hidden)

basically, all these created a set of mind-body problems, which are intractable.

The Diagnosis

Ryle labeled this as a Category Mistake, not just an error. A Category Mistake is when you treat a term as belonging to one type when it is another. Treating Fish as a Bird.

Some examples that he gave are:

A visitor goes to Oxford. Sees all the buildings, colleges, libraries, labs, and then asks “where is the university?”. I have seen where the dean sits and works, where the scientists work in labs and live, but i have not seen the University where the members of the university work and reside." The explanation to him is that University is not another collateral institution, of the same category as the colleges, labs, libraries, offices, which he has already seen. It is the way all those are organized, and that organization is labeled as University. Different categories.
Cricket has bowlers, batsmen, fielders, umpires, scorers and viewer is told what they do. Then he asks “but where is the famous team-spirit? i see a person doing the bowling, another doing the batting, but where is the person who is doing the team-spirit?”. The explanation is that team-spirit is the way bowling and batting are done. It is not a separate activity, like bowling and batting, but a different logical category altogether. It is the ghost. When a bowler bowls, he is doing a single activity of bowling, but the way he is bowling exhibits team-spirit. It isn’t that he is bowling and then showing team-spirit as a separate activity.
Same with a march-past of tanks, soldiers, guns, in groups of battalions and squadrons. If after watching a long procession, the viewer asks “but where is the army?” The explanation is, the march-past was not a procession of tanks, battalions, squadrons and a army, but it was a procession of tanks, battalions, squadrons of a army.

Same with Mind. It is not a label to a thing, but a label to a how. How the thing works. How behavior is done.

More correctly, it is a group of labels. At times, those labels are verb-nouns like the set of traits = knowing, believing, understanding; and at other times verbs. BUT NOT A FIXED NOUN.

What Ryle is Not Saying

He isn’t saying - “there is no mind and everything is bodily movement.” He does support the idea that when you do a long division, you are indeed doing a mental process. But that process is part of the box of labels called “mind.” Not, that the mind is doing the long division.

The doer and doing distinction isn’t there.
There is no inner doer.
There is no parallel universe of a public physical one and a private mental one.

What gets destroyed

Privacy of consciousness as a philosophical foundation - goes. Cartesian certainty about inner states goes. There is no private stream of which i am absolutely certain.
Mind-body problems - the typical posturing goes. Not as we found a solution, but as that the question was a language misconstruction.
Solipsism as a serious worry goes = we cannot know other minds at all. We still understand how mental conduct concepts apply to all, so no need to question that.

Applied to Cook Ding

one of my fav characters!
There is no ghost within Ding who is analysing the anatomy of ox, making precise calculations, and then coordinating the dance and butchering.
The entire thing is in the movement itself, and there is no separate doer agent in Ding.
Knowing is Doing.

Applied to Poisoned Observer

Ryle says that there is no self-luminous observer who is doing the updating. It is a matter of practice and disposition. Zhuangzi says the updater and updated are not two separate things needing coordination.

Q. If mind is not a noun, is it correct to say it is a verb?

No. It is neither a fixed noun nor a fixed verb. It is a box of processes, labels, dynamic. = a placeholder for a family of concepts that describe how a living thing engages with the world.

Q. Is Mind a dynamic label?

as such, that is a big improvement from usual usage.

Ryle would be happy with that.
Witty would say: like “Game” can be very different processes with a common theme. There is a family resemblance. Part of language game (context dependent).
Zhuangzi would say: the point where we put on a label, we have divided, carved out the world into pieces, which were not there originally. He would then ask - what is the need for the label? Better to respond directly. Ding responds to ox, not to the label of ox. He would warn, even a dynamic label will create a new cage if you grip it.
- So hold it lightly. That isn’t evasion or avoidance.
- That is the correct epistemic posture towards a word which was doing too much work.

Essay 3:

Three Types of Decision-making

As per Venkatesh Rao (of Ribbonfarm blog fame) in his talk with Shane Parrish (of Farnam Street blog), there are three types of decision making systems:

Conceptual Reasoners - Use mental models, find frames to look at a problem, find correct metaphors to use, and then analyse the results of those conceptual reasons to arrive at a conclusion / solution.
Ethical Reasoners - they divide the world into good and evil. Not necessarily true and false. They use ethical reasoning as their framework. They have a wide scale of simplistic divisions to much more sophisticated (than group 1) ways to label as their good v evil.
Affiliational / Tribal Thinkers - this group of people don’t have a decision making process or framework within their own minds. They take that from the collective consciousness of the group they belong to. How do they identify a group? They tend to emotionally resonate with a group and joint them. The choice is not based upon rational process but based on with whom they want to be friends, party with, hang around with, marry!, etc. Or they become part of a group by default due to being part of school, college, work place, religion, society, etc. After joining the group, they adopt the entire set of opinions of the group, without actually checking / analysing any of them. These are the default Neurath’s raft people.

Which is better?

as always, it depends. Group 1 thrives better in individualistic communities. While groups 2 and 3 do better in more communal / social communities.

From evolutionary POV, humans are hyper-social and in that scenario, herd behavior makes a lot of sense. Humans who were outcast from their group didn’t survive much, so herd behavior has always been a good choice. Group 3 does that without additional cognitive load. Group 2 also does the same thing, but with a label - when you label something as evil, it is easier to fight / unite against it and can act without hesitation. Group 1 people will tend to hesitate, think over in details, pros and cons, etc.

In general, it is likely that group 3 is more numerous than others.

Caveat

In these three types, I identify with the first group (as do both VR and SP above, and also why I agree with them enough to reference them). But it is possible that I may be part of group 3, just that my group is different.

Essay 1: The Poisoned Observer

Introduction:

In Ancient China, it was a confucian ritual to mourn for a period of three years after the death of the parent or grandparent. The period of three years was kept to match the period which a child takes to fully wean. Similar is the system of 12 or 13 day immediate mourning period in North India, followed by an extensive system of monthly and yearly customs. Because you are have been brought up within those systems, if you don’t do that, you will feel guilt. And people around you, who have the same kind of upbringing, would shame you into doing that.

This suggests that there is an internal system of values and rules and opinions which acts as the Framework by which all other things are described, assessed, and judged.

My basic thinking framework (as i understand) is Bayesian.

By definition, it is a rigid formal method with some math involved. It requires me to do the following steps:

Write down my assumptions and assign independent likelihood to them, before seeing the evidence. These are called Priors.
Then I see the evidence, in form of whatever I see, read, hear, think, experimental data. = Observations and Experiments.
And on that basis, I calculate the Posteriors. This Posterior then becomes the Prior for the next observation. Basically, I am running this loop continuously.

However, this rigid mathematical system is not what I follow normally. In normal usage, I don’t do maths explicitly. It works more like:

I hold beliefs with degrees of confidence rather than binary true or false.
New evidence shifts those degrees - sometimes a little, other times a lot, depending upon how surprising the evidence is.
I don’t treat any belief as permanently settled. There is always a possibility that some new evidence in the future may change my current belief.

Where do the Priors Come from

Where do these prior positions comes from? I didn’t choose them from within. As in, I didn’t one day sat down and wrote (or mentally kept track) of all the base assumptions and positions. I grew up in a community and from that I inherited this framework of priors. ‘This is right, and that is wrong, and this is acceptable’ - all came from that community (We also call it Culture). And the mechanism of installation of that framework into my mind was through language, hence a better term is linguistic community.

Movies, pop songs, bhakti songs, poems, cultural and religious epics, stories, and puranas, fiction novels and short stories, manusmritis, tablets of Moses and Epictetus, parents, neighbors, and friends and their parents advices and warnings, spoken and written and unspoken laws and customs. I swim in this immense ocean of various ideas and assumptions and traditions. And these all subconsciously affect me and form my priors in all things and situations.

Thirty years back, I didn’t consider gay rights as an important thing to be considered in my mind (and for a long time, it remained unlawful in my country). But with time and slow diffusion from western culture, it creeped slowly my mindset. My view is agnostic - if someone wants to do it, it should be okay. Eventually, the Indian laws also changed in this regard, with eventual removal of unlawfulness of the act.

Do Priors Change

How did something which was not into any consideration in my mind thirty years back, slowly become one to put a small amount of energy about correctness or wrongness? This suggests that the positions change with time, because of all that swimming in the culture.

Either I can let the culture dictate those changes or I can actually check them myself and then based on rationality, tradition, logical reasoning steps, or emotion (observations and experiments) change them myself. Let the loop run from outside or consciously run it myself.

If I let the culture dictate it, it goes out of my control. Then either I get to hold confusing set of beliefs which themselves are unstable or I can take the control in my hand.

The Poisoned Observer

Who checks this? This checking of the system is itself done by a checker that is built upon priors. There is no pure unadulterated checker who can check everything and every layer in an unbiased manner. The checker is poisoned from all the priors. There is no solid fixed position from where you can check everything (or anything), and the rules for checking themselves are also based on all those priors. Everything, the checker, the rules for checking, and the things to be checked all are built upon by the Priors, and all these are installed through language by the linguistic community.

in other words, the observer is poisoned.

This situation is not a disaster. It makes me think of everything with humility, and not confidence (or over-confidence). Even when I am checking upon something, this entire chain of priors up to the checker tends to keep me humble and aware.

Belief Correction

Option 1:

Don’t check your beliefs. Most people are in this mode. They are completely outward looking and have no idea about their own beliefs.

Option 2:

Check only their superficial beliefs. Some people do that. What they don’t check is how they come to have those beliefs (comes from culture, their linguistic community, the family you grew up within, etc.)

Option 3:

Check the superficial beliefs, as well as the multiple layers of deeper beliefs. The deeper one goes, more effective is the effort of checking those foundational layers of beliefs.

Remember Pareto’s principle (80-20 principle, Power Law) - it says that 20% of efforts yield 80% of results. There is a layered pareto also - which multiplies this effect by itself. A two-layer Pareto says that 4% (20% of 20%) can have a 64% (80% of 80%) effect. And a three-layer says ~1% (20% of 20% of 20% = 0.8%) can have a 51% (80% of 80% of 80%) effect. As a fun sidenote, most societies have 1% of population having 50% of wealth - this is a burning point for many socialists. The power law is ubiquitous.

In case of option 3, if I go to second or third layers of beliefs, only 1-4% of efforts would tend to give me 50-64% effect in clarifying things for me. In other words, going deeper is very effective.

And the poisoned observer works in reverse also. When I change my beliefs, I change myself too.

The linguistic community has the so-called hyper-priors within it, from which the actual priors and the Observer himself who checks those priors are built upon. They do the observations and experiments and form the Posteriors as well as the Posterior based Checker for future.

Essay 2: Neurath’s Raft

Basic Metaphors

There is the Ship of Theseus idea, in which a ship gets changed over time, one plank by one plank, and the question asked is: is it the same ship or is it a different one? To make it harder, then they use those old discarded planks and use them to build an identical ship. Now, which one is the Ship of Theseus - is it the first one or the second reconstructed one? It is a very intriguing philosophical question.

On these lines, there is another ship problem - ship of Neurath. In this, they say that they are trying to build a ship in the ocean itself. So, they do not have the luxury to build it one plank by one plank. They have to build it in a way that the smallest, earliest first unit is itself able to float. And then they build upon that floating thing one plank by one plank, and that creates a final ship or Raft.

Now, these are two completely different philosophies. Build a ship in the shipyard - use good machines, perfectly cut planks, perfectly planned structural and engineering blueprints - and you get a perfect ship. Perfect in the sense of making one in the yard. The Titanic was perfectly built in the shipyard but when it went out in the ocean world, it didn’t even complete a single journey - so much for perfectness. And the other side: you start building upon whatever is available, whether that is a good plank or a half-rotten plank, a properly cut one or a half-disintegrated partial plank. You use it to build upon the raft. Tie the ropes. Keep it functional right from the start - and with time, without ever neglecting that functionality at any point in time - keeping it afloat at all times - you make a bigger or better or more efficient or faster or more stable ship.

Application to Thinking System

Now, this system, this metaphor, is applicable to my body of knowledge, my philosophical system. I started with something. Now, that start was based upon my childhood culture, the places I lived, the cultures of those places - those got incorporated as the first little raft.

Many people don’t add anything to that original culture, original raft. They say: okay, we have been floating well since our childhood and we don’t find any particular reason to change or improve our raft, because there is always a possibility that in trying to improve it, they can disimprove it - they can cause the untying of a base, the untying of a rope which would collapse their own raft. So, they don’t want to take that risk. There is nothing wrong with that kind of approach.

Propaganda - which is a good label - is basically the modification of those default rafts. To guide people who don’t want to change the raft into a particular direction. Now, that direction is decided by those who are creating the propaganda, creating the mass media, the influencers of the mass media - those are the people who are creating those default rafts or modifying them. And people who don’t want to change the rafts on their own just keep on using these default rafts. And default rafts are not always bad - they are there because of a reason. They help in floating people continuously. But a floating raft doesn’t have a direction. It just flows with the river.

And the propagandists, the mass media, the academia’s high priests (in a coordinated or uncoordinated manner) - they change the default rafts - in a guided way, self-consciously, or completely dependent upon each other. Some give them theory, system. Depending upon the direction of the river (=reality), the flow of the river - widening, narrowing, up and down, slow and fast, these entities change the default rafts - what can be done, what cannot be done. Moral laws, social laws and customs, rhetoric, everything is used.

I always have the choice to change my raft. I can take instruction from people who have changed their rafts. I can take instructions from how the default raft was there, say 40 years back, or 100 years back, or 2000 years back. I can study that the default past raft was like this and the current raft is like that, and I can incorporate the better parts of this and that rafts. I can even back to the older raft system, or I can create a hybrid, or I can take the help of multiple older raft systems and synthesize a completely new one. I can become a path-breaker. What I want to do, that is up to me.

General Idea

Understanding what raft you are floating on gives you your priors. And you have to continuously build upon that particular raft, chaing one plank at a time, sometimes tightening few, sometimes removing few. Over time, maybe you will get a faster, better, stabler ship. Maybe you will disentangle and destroy your raft. If you have the self-confidence that you can build a newer raft in any situation, then you can be more aggressive in this ship-building process. In the process of untangling, it is possible that you may drown in laziness or inability to build a corner raft. Sometimes people undergo life situations, in which the storm blows up their rafts - they get confused about how they used to view the world and how it actually worked. All kinds of metaphorical combinations are possible.

So, coming back to the original idea: get your priors, find out upon them - beliefs, values. Then use a good lens or multiple good lenses to look upon a newer text - in other words, a new thinking engineering manual. You need to learn the mathematical, physics, and chemistry rules in that, and then see how much you can use that newer manual to change your original raft. What is different. Why should you add something or subtract many things. The superfluous baggage, the garbage which you have been carrying on your raft - which was slowing it down or making it prone to drowning - all those things can be addressed.

And while you are doing that, you still need a continuously floating raft, and you can build upon a ship on that.

One of the special insights of the hierarchical Bayesian (from Essay 1 - The poisoned observer) is that the raft builder himself is made of those planks of the raft. When you change the planks, something changes in the raft builder also - that picture has to be kept in mind.

In Short

The default raft is the hyper-priors received from culture and upbringing, good or bad, and it is constantly being replaced. The Bayesian system is there, the default raft is there. Observations, books, philosophies, culture, mass media, our own experiences are there. If the intent and efforts are there, then the raft can be strengthened or made better. If no intent or no efforts, then it will float without doing anything on own! Choose!

Medicine Beyond Models: The Irreducible Encounter

Medicine is the only field where the tool and the patient are the same kind of things - one complex human system meeting another complex human system. That is not a limitation, which needs to be overcome. It is precisely the practice.

Medicine is basically a field where no single model is complete, and the models are always being revised.

By model, i mean it is a simplified picture of how something is or how it works. And it is useful exactly because it leaves things out. Doctors are a special kind of cartographers trying to build up better and better maps to different types of territories.

How do we build those? We started with dissecting the human body, of a cadaver precisely not alive human. Some of us had experience with dissecting a frog or cockroaches (plenty a dime at my place). if you have never seen an open frog, you would be very surprised how much empty it really is. so we cut open a cadaver slowly, methodically, and matched with the photographs in an accompanying manual. we did what it asked us to do, and we continued to match and understand the specific naming systems. the naming systems and particular language are a new language which we learnt so that we can read and talk through that new language with other doctors and nurses and be sure what we are trying to convey is correctly and unambiguously understood by them. and we use it to read books, articles, journals, all life.

Over time, we got comfortable building those new language and mental models of how some particular structure in body is seen and how it is expected to be at a certain place only and not at some other place. Then we shifted to not normal stuff aka pathology. Those normal structures - how can they go wrong. so that knowledge was built upon multiple such cuttings of not-normal structures. We built branches over our normal mental models. eg. the stomach model has this normal model and these abnormal models (which can be of a huge variety).

We also pattern matched these newer not-normal models to find patterns across multiple structures and systems. So, we found Infection Models work reasonably well across the Stomach model, Liver model, Kidney model, etc. This all works pretty well for most of the structures.

Except the brain system. The system is completely different from all other systems. For example, it has a different way of blood supply. Which we named blood-brain-barrier (just a model to say that there is some kind of barrier to normal passage of stuff between the brain tissue and blood).

Over time, more correctly in only last few decades, we have started to see the brain in exquisite detail live and we have been able to have some understanding of which side and which parts of it do what (or get active doing some particular activity).

So for brain things, the models are relatively new and they have to be assessed in terms of what the patient says about his problems, how we are able to see what is happening, what we give (by trial and error) and how it affects the patients. we keep on doing it, write the entire process and revise it more and more. since it is a relatively new field, there are lot of competing what-to-do models, including non-medicinal models and medicine-models. we have done lot of experimental stuff to name all the various little parts of all these models (namely the little chemicals which go to and fro), but they are mostly arbitrary. imo, we are a long way from deep understanding.

The brain has a different problem too. The structure of brain and the function of brain are very disjointed categories. like if you are reading this line, a combination of light pattern goes from this LED to your eyeball, to a functioning wire connecting the back of the eyeball to back of your brain, and then it lights up a particular set of other wires, which are criss-crossed across lot of other brain parts. This is just this little reading line. add the memory of this particular style of light pattern with what it means. now build upon this layer of complexity to what things are normal (the normal model). what things are out of normal (huge number of other not-normal models). and what-to-do models about all those.

When someone thinks of DSM as some sort of fixed written well defined set of maps, i think it is a wrong idea - it is like confusing the map with the territory. IMO, it is a good (at present) way to have a comprehensive set of loose maps. and it will be revised as our understanding gets better, sometimes worse before getting better. sometimes, there will be paradigm shifts.

Same with the genetics parts: yes, those are some newer models, in which we pattern-matched some particular sequences with some disease patterns, because we found few which were absolutely always associated with one particular way of the patient’s model of behavior (we call them sure-shot way to label a model). and at other times, it was just found to be more common (we call them more or less probable ways of having a particular set of problem model).

But my base understanding is: Medicine is an interactive playing of what patient shows up, what lenses the doctors have, what models are used to try to change the course of patient’s behavior and how it can help in changing the course. At times, it is as simple to sit and listen to the patient and the doctor needs to lend the ear and hold the hand. And at other times, it is a full fledged active working of doctor, a nurse, and 3 attendants to tie the patient and give a sleeping medicine.

So, given how much of this is model-stacking on model-stacking, where does the irreducible human encounter fit? I don’t think it as a failure of science, but as the thing which makes medicine medicine and not engineering.

Substack to Local html and to epub

Problem

To convert the public posts of a substack blog into epub.

Solution

By using sbstck-dl.

Step 1: first install the Go language. The easiest way which would download, install the language, and then configure the PATH automatically.

In PowerShell (windows) > winget install GoLang.Go

Step 2: verify it
> go version

Step 3: download the sbstck-dl-win-amd64.exe file from the above mentioned sbstck-dl repo. The method of installation provided in the repo installs an earlier version.

Step 4: Better to create a new directory with the exe file in it and then run the following command .\sbstck-dl-win-amd64.exe download --url https://example.substack.com --download-images --create-archive

This will download the entire public blog at example.substack.com, download all the files in html format (sbstck-dl has options to download individual posts as well as into md or text formats, instead of html), and also download the images in a separate folder. These html files can then be read in the browser directly. The create-archive option creates an index.html file which can then be used for TOC (table of contents) for the entire blog.

Step 5: To convert the entire stack of html files into an epub, there are two ways: either use ebook-convert (you get that with Calibre) or by using pandoc. Both are available in scoop and can be installed scoop install calibre or scoop install pandoc.

Step 6: For text-heavy substacks, it is better to ignore the images and just have the texts. first create a local file no-images.lua with the following text

Step 7: Because of some windows powershell glob issues, you will have to run the following command in Powershell (this needs the index.html, all the blogpost html, the images folder, and the no-images.lua files in the same folder where the command is being run).

yt-dlp

From their github repo, download the appropriate version.
For Windows, it will be yt-dlp.exe / keep it in a separate folder.
Make sure you have ffmpeg installed on your system. If not, use scoop install ffmpeg would work.
Basic command to download a playlist as audio:

> yt-dlp -x "PLAYLIST_URL" The -x flag extracts audio and by default saves as the best available audio format.

and that’s it.

The Seed Thought

While reading Natalie Goldberg’s, Writing Down the Bones (1986) (recommendation from Randsinrepose’s post), I came to the following passage

A ballpoint, a pencil, a felt tip, for sure, are slow… I mostly use a cheap Sheaffer fountain pen, about $1.95… they often leak, but they are fast. The new roller pens that are out now are fast too, but there’s a slight loss of control. You want to be able to feel the connection and texture of the pen on paper."

Her claim is about:

Speed (keeping pace with the racing thoughts), and
Tactile feedback / control (the feedback from the writing process with the paper). This is a very subtle thing, which one can realise only when one is deep into the process. = Feel of Connection with the paper, with the process.

Some Physics

Fountain pens use water-based ink that flows via capillary action and gravity (you cannot write while hanging upside down!) –> creates a thin liquid film between the nib and paper that actively reduces friction –> nib glides rather than drags.
Ballpoints require manual pressure to spin the ball, which then releases viscous oil-based paste. There is an inherent resistance to the process.
Rollerballs also use water or gel based ink and are very smooth (as she rightly notes) and need very less pressure. The modern rollerballs are actually better in terms of extreme consistency (nibs have some variance), nil maintenance, and no leaking (many fountain pens, including the one which she used, have problems of leaking).

However, even though in terms of physics and engineering, rollerpens are better, they don’t match the sensory connection of writing on paper - the feedback and the ink line variations.

My Current Picks

Pentel Energel BL417 (0.7mm) - one word fantastic! One of the best pens all around the world in this category. I am using black, blue, and red variants in 0.7mm size. Smooth, multiple colors available. The body is available at ~40 bucks and refills available everywhere at 25-30 bucks. It has a 0.5mm variant also, but I haven’t used it till now. This is the workhorse one can keep everywhere.
Uniball Gel Impact (1.0mm) - great again at the 1.0mm level. I have a black and blue variants. The blue variant body has broken though. Around 100 bucks.
Uniball Eye (0.5mm) - multiple colors available. Around 100 bucks. Writes very smoothly without smudges. Fast drying and heat-stable (can keep in car in Indian summers). The problem is it is a use-and-throw.
Hauser XO - fine as a throwaway. But it is scratchy. Easily available. Extremely cheap (10 bucks).
Schneider One (0.6mm). This one blows the Energel also. It has a Super-Flow system - a pressurized ink delivery mechanism which maintains consistent flow from first to last drop. The ink is water-based, but both waterproof and document-proof (there is a Sign brand also within its ecosystem). Once you have written with this, there is no going back. You cannot lose that experience and it will haunt you. In India, it is made in collaboration with Luxor (Luxor Schneider). There are two variants in this - I used the Schneider One Business (around 150-180 bucks), which is a use and throw, unfortunately. There is a variant called Schneider One Change, which has refills available.
1. I particularly used the Schneider One Business (SOB) in Blue ink. On a plain paper, it wrote beautifully. The next morning, I saw the page in sunlight, and it had a sexy purple/violet tinge. The exact color is violet-blue.
2. The Schneider One Change don’t have the violet-blue ink. Those only come in black, blue (normal blue), and red. Dang!
3. LX-Schneider Max 0.5mm - not used by me, so no opinion.

Final Verdict

Schneider One Business - Violet-Blue is my most favorite writing instrument. But it suffers from absence of refills (I hate the use-and-throw systems, because they are inefficient and feel like unnecessary contribution to waste) and relatively expensive.

The Pros and Cons of Micro-gel Pens

The smaller the point size (0.38mm), the more force is needed to put the gel on the paper. This you feel by more drag feel on the paper. This also causes more grip pressure –> you will feel fatigue in a long writing session. Use these as precision tools - for slow, deliberate writing, for making dense notes, diagrams, or marginalia.

Alternative

I continued the search of how best to have the feel of SOB (pun intended) and the ink color. There is no other way in the rollers and gel pens (they have violet options though, but not violet-blue). Didn’t bother to check the ballpoints.

So, the next option is back to Fountain Pens and to match the ink with similar shade. Hrmph.

First the Inks

Krishna Inks have extremely cheap but widely praised options. They have a Arctic Spring Lilac option - but I could not find from where to buy.
Lamy has a Dark Lilac T52 - probably the closest to SOB shade - unavailable.
Diamine Violet
Lapis-Bard Purple Rain - cannot find online.

Then the Fountain Pens

Filling Systems

There are multiple ways to fill ink in a fountain pen. In the older days, there were basically three ways to fill ink:

Open back and fill directly into the barrel. Modern terminology = Eyedropper fill.
A built-in suction or piston mechanism in which you suck the ink = Piston-filler pen (like Lamy 2000, TWSBI Eco).
Rubber vacuum thing which could be used to fill ink through the nib = Build-in converter but permanent.
Instead of rubber thing, there is a refillable suction unit = Removable Converter (Lamy Z28).
Cartridges, where you break top, and insert = Proprietary or international cartridge.

For use with inkpots, you will have to avoid pens with option 5.

Note about Lamy Nibs: Lamy nibs tend to wider than standard (their idiosyncrasy). So, their M nib will tend to write like B from other brands, and their EF is like an F.
The EF and F nibs write very sharply, but then depending upon the paper, they can be scratchy during the upstrokes. You will need better grade paper to write with them.
If the writing is moderate size, use standard M (Lamy F) and if the writing is compact or non-cursive, then use standard F.
1.1 Stub Nibs: These are much wider nibis and have thick horizontals and thin horizontals. Works like calligraphy

Specific Recommendations

Absolute Budget level - Platinum Preppy (600-800). It has a standard international cartridge. You will have to fill it up with syringes. Messy.
Many of the Pilot pens. Didn’t look deeper into them.
Lamy Safari with the F nib - it has a plastic body but very well regarded. Triangular grip (you grip the pen in a particular way only and not in any random way). It has an included converter in their box. Can change nibs, but their nibs are relatively expensive. They have numbers like 012/014, etc. which are for their color but the pen remains same.
Lamy Vista - exact same pen as Safari, but with a transparent body.
Lamy Al-Star - same as Lamy Safari, but with an aluminium body.
Lamy 2000 - a collector’s pen, with gold nib.
TWSBI Eco - it has a built-in piston filler (like Lamy 2000), which makes it a higher ink capacity (about 1.7-2.0ml versus 0.5-0.7ml in a Z28 converter). Triangular grip.
TWSBI Swipe - like a Safari, with converter (but bigger than Lamy’s). Round grip (so, you have to consciously remember to hold in a particular way)

Final Choice

TWSBI Eco (purple color) Medium Nib + Diamine Violet Ink.

The Cook Ding story in the Inner Chapters remains the most precise description I know of expert skill that has moved beyond rule-following into something else - what Dreyfus would call absorbed coping.

The Making of This Site

Problem

I wanted a personal site that is plain, fast, cheap to keep running, and that I fully own: text files I can read in twenty years, no database, no accounts, no trackers.

Solution

A static site built with Hugo, hosted on GitLab Pages.

The pieces

Content - every post is a plain Markdown file with a short header (title, date, description). The files live in folders that become the sections of the site: Notebooks, Weblog, Guides, Questions and Reading.
Templates - no ready-made theme. A handful of small HTML templates (layouts/) and one stylesheet (static/style.css) control everything.
Hosting - the source sits in a private GitLab repository. Every push to the main branch triggers a GitLab CI job that runs hugo and publishes the result. The site is live about a minute after a push.

Design

Colours - the Gruvbox palette, in a light and a dark version. Each kind of element has one colour: titles orange, section headings aqua, sub-headings green, links blue, dates yellow, quotations purple.
Type - Source Serif 4 for reading text, the system font for small labels. The font is served from this site itself, trimmed to the characters the site actually uses (about 80 KB instead of about 2 MB).
Light / dark - follows your system setting. If you press the toggle, the choice is remembered in your own browser (local storage, not a cookie) and never leaves it.

What it does not have

No cookies, no analytics, no comments, no ads.
No requests to any other server: fonts, styles and feeds all come from this site.

Dates

The publish date is written in each post’s header.
The “Updated” date is automatic: at build time Hugo reads the git history and shows the date of the last change to that file. Nothing to maintain by hand.

Following the site

Every section has an RSS feed, and there is one feed for everything: feed.xml. Paste the site address into any feed reader and it will find them. The Archive lists every post on one page.

Adding a post

Create a Markdown file in the right section folder, with a header like:

In PowerShell (windows)

Step 2: check if you have python installed on your system.

it will download the ‘small’ model and then transcribe the podcast into a local text file.

The Obsidian Graph Is Mostly Useless

After three years, I can confirm that the graph view looks beautiful and provides almost no insight. The real value of Obsidian is simpler: durable Markdown files that will outlast any application.

What Actually Works

Daily notes - a timestamped scratch pad. Low friction. Most things live here first.
Source notes - one note per active project with a clear outcome statement.
Atomic notes - atomic, well-titled notes in the Zettelkasten sense. Expensive to create; valuable over years.

The mistake is treating the knowledge base as a product. It is a process. The act of writing is the work. A PKM system that takes more time to maintain than it saves in retrieval is a hobby.

Plain Text as an Archive Strategy

Everything important should be writable in plain text. A .md file written in 2010 is fully readable in 2026 without any application. A proprietary format written in 2010 may require archaeology.

On Language, Silence, and the Zhuangzi

Reading the Zhuangzi alongside the Tractatus this week. Cook Ding’s knife finds the hollow spaces in the ox - the joints, the cavities - and passes through without effort. Wittgenstein’s limit is Cook Ding’s hollow: not an obstacle, but the shape the work takes.

I am not sure this goes anywhere yet. But it is the kind of thought worth keeping.

What Obsidian Cannot Do

After almost three years of using Obsidian as my primary notes environment, I have arrived at a clear-eyed view of its limits. The graph is beautiful and mostly useless. The real value is in the plain-text Markdown files, which will outlast any application (original inspiration Derek Sivers).

The mistake is to treat a knowledge base as a product. It is not. It is a process. The act of writing a note is the work. Whether the note gets linked to seventeen other notes is secondary. A PKM system that takes more time to maintain than it saves in retrieval is a hobby, not a tool.

I have stripped my vault back to: daily notes, source notes, and atomic notes (in the Zettelkasten sense). No MOCs. No templates more complex than a heading and a date. Simpler is faster.
